A Chinese restaurant in Bundang-gu, Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, which was targeted in a so-called "lacquer terror" attack by a group of Chinese nationals during the Chuseok holiday, has decided to drop the name of China's top leader from its signboard over fears of additional damage and resume business after five days.

According to police and other sources, the owner of the affected restaurant changed the business name to a general term that does not evoke a specific person ("O-hyang") and reopened today (September 29).

The new signboard is reportedly scheduled to be installed around next week.

The owner told the media, "We decided to change the name out of concern for potential further damage and because we judged that continuing to use the original name after this incident could lead to social controversy."

However, the owner added that they did not request separate personal protection measures or increased patrols around the store.

To prepare for reopening, the owner purchased new chairs and fixtures damaged during the crime, reimbursed the rental POS terminal, and leased it again, according to reports.

The owner also stated that all ingredients worth 1 million won suspected of being exposed to pesticides or insecticides will be discarded.

Previously, four Chinese men in their 20s to 40s broke into the Chinese restaurant around 2:40 a.m. on September 24, the first day of the Chuseok holiday, smeared lacquer and paint throughout the interior, sprayed a substance presumed to be pesticide on the ingredients, and fled to China on the same day.

The police identified the suspects, applied for arrest warrants, and initiated international judicial cooperation procedures.

They are also awaiting the results of an ingredient appraisal requested from the National Forensic Service while investigating any connection to a previous sign-vandalism incident at the same restaurant that occurred in July.
