A project is currently underway to build our own independent AI foundation model. Given that many people, including myself, are already using AI from major U.S. tech companies like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, why must we spend a massive amount of money to create an "independent AI"? SBS Discovery of Knowledge asked Professor Yoon Sung-ro of Seoul National University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering for the reasons. Professor Yoon emphasized that while countries lacking the capability inevitably have to rely on overseas models, it is not just out of blind national pride—South Korea actually possesses the capability.
