Following Anthropic, another AI researcher at Google has resigned, raising concerns over the rapid pace of artificial intelligence development.

According to the U.S. AI industry on September 24, Robert O'Callahan, a researcher at Google's AI division Google DeepMind, announced via X (formerly Twitter) that he had left Google, confessing that he felt compelled to resign because he believes AI is developing too quickly.

Residing in New Zealand, he explained the reason for his departure in a resignation letter published on his personal blog, stating, "Our team's ultimate goal is to make AI much cheaper and reduce latency, but I do not believe this is a good thing for people at present."

He emphasized, "While I am not 100% certain that the probability of doom from artificial superintelligence (ASI—AI possessing abilities superior to humans in most areas) is absolute, the risk is real and uncertain, and that fact alone is deeply alarming."

He also claimed that many of the phenomena predicted by pessimists, such as "reward hacking" and "misalignment," have actually occurred.

Previously, Jacob Hilton, a researcher who worked at OpenAI and then Anthropic, made headlines by announcing his resignation while warning that AI could destroy humanity within 10 years.

Following Hilton's resignation, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei argued for slowing down AI development, leading the AI industry to divide into supporting and opposing factions in an ongoing debate.

In connection with this, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates also warned in an interview with NBC partially released on September 25 local time that AI could potentially cause the deaths of 1 billion people if maliciously exploited by bad actors.
