American actors Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder have been arrested after participating in a protest denouncing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to outlets including The New York Times (NYT) and AFP, the New York City Police Department arrested about 100 people on the 24th local time in Midtown Manhattan who were demonstrating against Prime Minister Netanyahu's attendance at the UN General Assembly.

Among those arrested were Sarandon and Einbinder, along with several other prominent figures known for their pro-Palestinian activism.

AFP footage showed police placing Sarandon in handcuffs and transporting her from the scene.

Einbinder was also detained at the scene with her arms twisted behind her back, according to the New York Post.

Police stated they were dispatched after receiving reports that protesters were blocking a road intersection and holding an unannounced demonstration.

A New York Police Department spokesperson said, "We issued warning broadcasts advising participants to voluntarily disperse, but they continued to occupy the intersection," adding, "A number of individuals who failed to comply with the instructions were arrested."

Police did not disclose the exact number of arrests.

However, the advocacy group Jewish Voice for Peace, which organized the protest, claimed via social media that more than 100 people were arrested.

Stephanie Fox, executive director of the group, explained in a media interview, "We are here not just to oppose Netanyahu, but to demand an end to weapons support for Israel and to stop the genocide."

That day at the UN Headquarters in New York, as Prime Minister Netanyahu took the podium to speak, delegations from various countries staged a mass walkout.

Walking out of a UN assembly hall is typically a strong diplomatic protest used to express discontent and rejection.

In his UN General Assembly speech, Prime Minister Netanyahu claimed that "accusing Israel of genocide is one of the biggest lies of the century," actively defending Israel's military operations against the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
