A "black tornado" that appeared in the capital of Argentina has been causing mounting concern and hardship among citizens.

According to foreign media outlets such as Brazil's Milenio on August 25 of last year, a video filmed on a highway in Buenos Aires, Argentina, has been spreading across social media, sparking fear.

The video in question clearly captures several black pillars stretching high into the sky. As the pitch-black tornado continuously grew in size, numerous "black particles" scattered in the wind and slammed against car windshields.


The true identity of these black particles, which initially looked like sand or ash, turned out to be none other than mosquitoes. The citizen who filmed the video expressed astonishment, saying, "The tornado keeps getting bigger. This is the first time I have seen a sight like this in my life." Their companion laughed in disbelief, remarking, "Who would believe that all of those are swarms of mosquitoes?"

The giant "mosquito tornado" was revealed to be the joint product of sudden heavy rainfall and hot weather.

Experts analyzed that a heavy downpour in a short period created a hot and humid atmosphere favorable for tornadoes, and swarms of mosquitoes inhabiting riverbanks were swept up in the tornado while flying to escape the suddenly rising river waters.


As citizens' fear grew over the mosquitoes carried by the tornado, Juan Garcia, a researcher at the Argentine Institute of Parasitology, explained, "The mosquito swarms currently being observed are not dengue mosquitoes. They do not transmit any viruses to us."

He added, "Unlike dengue mosquitoes, these mosquitoes swarm at a height of only a few meters above the ground, so they will not cause major harm."


However, following August 22 when the "mosquito tornado" video was filmed, reports of damage from citizens claiming that the inside and outside of their homes had been overtaken by swarms of mosquitoes have continued to emerge on social media. In particular, the famous resort cities of Pinamar and Villa Gesell in Buenos Aires were reportedly hit directly by the mosquito swarms.

Local veterinarians stated, "In fact, there is no way for citizens to cope with this situation," but added, "Fortunately, since the lifespan of these mosquitoes is only around 7 days, we expect the mosquito population to decrease to normal levels soon."
