A man in his 20s who assaulted a Coast Guard officer—putting him in a chokehold after being rescued from an apparent suicide attempt in the ocean—has been arrested by police.

The suspect, identified as Mr. A, is accused of wrapping his arm around the neck of a Coast Guard officer and choking him while under the influence around 1:00 AM today (September 23) near Jaguri Coast in Seogwipo, Jeju.

Earlier, around 12:25 AM, Mr. A's companions had reported him missing to the police, stating, "We cannot reach Mr. A. He is pessimistic about his life and seems likely to make an extreme choice."

Upon receiving the report, Coast Guard officers were dispatched, entered the water, rescued Mr. A, and brought him ashore.

However, immediately after being rescued, Mr. A got into an argument with his companions and assaulted a Coast Guard officer who stepped in to stop them by putting him in a "choke."

A choke is a martial arts technique that restricts an opponent's airway using the arm or other parts.

Fortunately, the assaulted Coast Guard officer reportedly did not sustain major injuries.

Seogwipo Police, responding to another call from Mr. A's companions, arrived at the scene and apprehended Mr. A red-handed for obstruction of official duties.

Police investigations revealed that Mr. A was heavily intoxicated at the time and had repeatedly jumped into the sea.

Police are currently investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
