It has been belatedly revealed that an elderly man living alone in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, who was in critical condition after being unable to eat for several days, was safely rescued thanks to the attentiveness of a neighbor.

According to Chungju City on September 23, Mr. A, in his 70s, who lives alone in Munhwa-dong, has been living without contact with his children since his wife passed away 30 years ago.

As he entered old age, Mr. A began experiencing difficulties in daily life, such as a decline in cognitive function, and was reportedly on the verge of starvation after failing to even eat for several days.

At a moment when his life could have been in danger, what saved him was the careful attention of a resident living right across from him.

Noticing that Mr. A had not left his home for a week, the neighbor reported it to the administrative welfare center on the 10th of this month, reaching out a helping hand for his rescue.

The elderly man is currently receiving intensive inpatient treatment at a hospital, where he has regained stability and largely recovered his strength.

The city plans to assist him in applying for a long-term care grading evaluation and connect him with community welfare services even after his discharge.

An official from the city said, "This reminds us once again that residents who watch over their neighbors from the closest distance are the core of community welfare," adding, "We deeply appreciate the warm interest of our residents."
