South Korean swimming star Hwang Sun-woo (Gangwon State Office) has taken a smooth first step toward defending his title in the men's 200-meter freestyle at the Asian Games.

Hwang advanced to the final in second place overall with a time of 1 minute and 47.97 seconds in the heats of the men's 200-meter freestyle at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games held at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre in Japan on September 23.

Hwang, the champion of this event at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, will go for his second consecutive gold medal in the final scheduled to take place at the same venue later today at 5:24 PM.

Japan's Murasa Tatsuya, who is expected to compete with Hwang for the gold medal, finished first overall with 1 minute and 47.60 seconds.

China's Zhang Zhanshu advanced to the final in fifth place with 1 minute and 48.68 seconds.

Kim Woo-min (Gangwon State Office), who was scheduled to compete alongside Hwang, withdrew due to a shoulder injury.

Hwang won the gold medal in this event at the 2022 Hangzhou Games with a time of 1 minute and 44.40 seconds, and set an Asian record by shortening his time to 1 minute and 43.92 seconds at the National Sports Festival last year.
