Casualties continue to mount in Japan following the strike of powerful Typhoon Dujuan, with the death toll rising to nine as of today (the 23rd).

According to local media, Typhoon Dujuan, the 25th typhoon, poured heavy rain on the Kanto region, including Tokyo, until early yesterday morning, causing landslides and flooding that resulted in nine deaths and four missing persons in Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures.

Torrential rains began pouring in these areas from the afternoon of the 21st as the typhoon moved northward.

In Oshima Town, Izu Islands, the 48-hour rainfall reached 832 millimeters.

This figure is more than 2.4 times the average rainfall for the entire month of September in a typical year and marks the highest since statistics began.

Eight locations recorded record-high rainfall since observations began, including Edogawa Ward in Tokyo, which received 282.5 millimeters of rain over a 24-hour period.

In Sakura City, Chiba Prefecture, the Takasaki River overflowed, flooding about 500 homes and submerging around 120 vehicles.
