A man in his 50s has been arrested by police after wandering the streets with a weapon following self-harm and shattering a supermarket window by throwing himself at it.

The Bucheon Ojeong Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced today (September 23) that it is investigating a man in his 50s, identified as A, on charges of carrying a weapon in a public place and property destruction.

A is accused of self-harming at his home in Ojeong-gu, Bucheon, at 12:35 PM on September 20 and then running into and breaking a window at a nearby supermarket.

At the time, he wandered the streets while bleeding and holding a weapon, and citizens who witnessed the acts reportedly made successive reports to the police.

Police received five emergency calls classified as Code 0, the highest level of emergency response under their manual, on that day and deployed officers equipped with protective gear, such as shields, to apprehend A at the scene.

A police official stated, "We believe that A did not swing the weapon at others or directly threaten anyone," adding, "In consideration of the risk of self-harm, we have placed A under emergency hospitalization for now."
