Delegations from the United States and Iran were found to have made contact on the 22nd (local time) at the UN Headquarters in New York, where the UN General Assembly is taking place.

During a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that day, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters in response to questions, "(The meeting with Iran) went very well. It ended an hour ago. It was a meeting that lasted for three hours."

On the U.S. side, Steve Witkoff, special envoy to President Trump, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner are believed to have participated.

The Iranian delegation included President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

President Trump said, "It was a very good meeting," adding, "There are two choices for (Iran). One is complete destruction, and the other choice is the potential to become great. Iran can be a great nation."

President Trump stated, "We had a very productive meeting, and additional meetings are scheduled in the very near future."

President Trump emphasized, "They had a very good meeting. We will see what results come out," while also stressing, "However, what is clear is that making a deal is also beneficial to the Iranian side."

President Trump had previously mentioned in his UN General Assembly speech that there are two choices: "Will we reach an agreement with Iran so they can rebuild and build a nation far greater than ever before?" or "Will we rapidly annihilate Iran, never giving them the chance to kill people and destroy nations again?"

He then projected, "I believe an agreement will be reached right after the (midterm) elections."

CNN reported, citing officials, that President Trump wanted to meet with the Iranian side on the occasion of the UN General Assembly under the premise "if conditions are right."
