Shum Siu-hung, a Hong Kong athlete who won the gold medal in the women's changquan wushu taolu event at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, is drawing widespread attention after revealing that she kept a promise she made to the K-pop group EXO.

Competiting at the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium in Nagoya, Japan, on the 21st, Shum claimed victory in the women's changquan wushu taolu event with a total score of 9.713 points—comprising 5.000 points for quality of movement, 2.713 points for overall performance, and 2.00 points for difficulty. She edged out Su Chu-wen of Macau (9.710 points) by a narrow margin of 0.003 points.

Shum posted photos of herself with EXO members and a video of receiving encouragement from member KAI at an EXO fan meeting on her social media, writing in Korean, "I worked really hard to keep this promise! Thank you!"

She also added, "Let's meet at the encore concert on November 6 to 8!"

In the video, KAI asks Shum, who attended the fan meeting, "If I make a crown (above your head), can you win a gold medal?" to which Shum replies, "I will do my best."

KAI then raised both hands above his head to form the shape of a crown to cheer her on, leaving Shum covering her face with both hands in excitement.

Sharing past footage, Shum expressed that the encouragement from EXO served as a major source of strength during her training and became the driving force behind her victory at this competition.

Shum is a veteran athlete who has competed in three Asian Games up to this tournament.

She also served as the flag bearer for Hong Kong at the opening ceremony of the Games.

According to Hong Kong media outlet HK01, Shum has been a fan of EXO since her middle school days and started sports inspired by the desire to shine on stage just like EXO.

Her affection for EXO was also reflected in the competition uniform she wore for the event.

The uniform is decorated with hexagonal patterns, a geometric shape that symbolizes EXO.
