Yoon Jung-hyun (25, Hwaseong City Hall) has captured the South Korean fencing team's first medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

Ranked 32nd by the International Fencing Federation (FIE), Yoon secured a bronze medal after losing 13-15 to Ryan Choi of Hong Kong (world No. 7) in the men's foil semifinals held today at the Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

In the men's individual foil event, which is decided through a knockout tournament starting from the round of 32, joint bronze medals are awarded to the two losing semifinalists.

Yoon, who has a unique background of taking up fencing and starting his athletic career while living in Russia during his teens, has been active as a senior national team member since the 2023-2024 season.

Having gained confidence after winning his first FIE World Cup individual medal (bronze) at the Cairo event in Egypt in March of last year, he established himself as a new leading figure in the men's foil division by also winning a bronze medal at the Asian Championships individual event last year.

After also claiming a bronze medal at this year's Asian Championships, he reached the podium at the Asian Games, his very first major international multi-sport event.

After receiving a bye in the round of 32 today, Yoon built momentum by defeating Chen Yi-tung (Chinese Taipei) 15-4 in the round of 16 and Danil Kravtsov (Uzbekistan) 15-5 in the quarterfinals.

However, in the semifinals against Ryan Choi, the individual champion of last year's World Championships, Yoon fell behind 0-3 early on and had to settle for a bronze medal despite a tight battle.

A maximum of two athletes per country are allowed to compete in the fencing individual events at these Asian Games.

Lee Kwang-hyun (Hwaseong City Hall), who competed alongside Yoon, was eliminated after losing 7-15 to Kazuki Iimura of Japan in the quarterfinals.

The men's foil national team, including these athletes, will aim for their third consecutive gold medal in the team event on the 25th.
