Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days on the condition that the United States eases its military pressure, in an effort to revive stalled end-of-war negotiations with Washington, Kyodo News reported on September 22 (local time).

A high-ranking Iranian government official told Kyodo News that Iran proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within a week if the United States takes initial steps to reduce military pressure.

This is interpreted as an indication that the Iranian side intends to step up diplomatic efforts to resume dialogue with the United States.

According to the official, Iran requested the resumption of dialogue to permanently end the hostile relationship between the two countries in this proposal, which has already been delivered to the United States through a mediator.

The Iranian government plans to hold relevant consultations with mediator nations on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly, which opens this week in New York.

While dismissing the possibility of a meeting between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the General Assembly, the official projected that progress toward an agreement between the two countries remains possible.

"The possibility of moving toward an agreement exists," the official added, noting that "to achieve diplomatic progress, the U.S. side must show sincerity and a willingness to fulfill its commitments."

In an interview with state broadcaster prior to his departure to attend the UN General Assembly on September 22, President Pezeshkian declared that he would "strongly articulate Iran's stance on the international stage."

"At this UN General Assembly, we will focus on raising the injustices suffered by the Iranian people, the crimes committed against them, and the mistrust created within the international community," he said.

President Pezeshkian continued, "Our enemies are attempting to block all channels in order to force the Iranian people to surrender.

Having failed to achieve their goals through military means, they are trying to weaken us from within," emphasizing that "we will surely thwart the enemies' schemes through unity and solidarity."
