Swiss national football team captain Granit Xhaka (Sunderland) has been excluded from the national team roster for the September and October international matches over allegations of purchasing a forged COVID-19 vaccination certificate.

British public broadcaster BBC reported on the 22nd (KST) that "Xhaka is under investigation by Swiss prosecutors on suspicion of obtaining a forged COVID-19 vaccination certificate in 2022," adding that "an investigation is underway to determine whether there were any unlawful acts in the process of acquiring the fake vaccination certificate."

The broadcaster added, "As he could face legal punishment, he has been left off the Swiss national team's roster for the international matches scheduled for September and October."

Through his social media, Xhaka admitted to purchasing the fake COVID-19 vaccination certificate, stating that he was influenced by distrust and uncertainty surrounding the vaccine.

He stated, "At the time, I harbored deep anxiety and serious doubts about the COVID-19 vaccine, and I was consumed by deep distrust, fear, and uncertainty regarding the vaccine," adding, "Amidst these chaotic emotions, rather than resolving my questions through legitimate procedures, I acquired the vaccination certificate. It was my mistake. I accept responsibility and am actively cooperating with the relevant authorities' investigation."

Consequently, the Swiss Football Association has decided not to include Xhaka in the national team for the UEFA Nations League matches scheduled for September and October.
