Pope Leo XIV stated on the 21st (local time) that "artificial intelligence (AI) systems must be developed to contribute to the dignity of all people and strengthen the bonds of humanity and family."

According to the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV made the remarks in a message sent to an AI conference held at Rome's Pontifical Lateran University on this day.

The Pope emphasized, "In a world marked by conflict and division, the advancement of artificial intelligence must draw inspiration from wisdom and love."

The event was co-hosted by the Pontifical Academy for Life and the Rome office of the United Nations University for Peace.

Attendees included U.S. economist Jeffrey Sachs and Svetlana Celli, President of the Rome City Council, among others.

The Pope has reportedly had a strong awareness of issues surrounding AI since before his accession.

In his first encyclical released after his accession in May, he stated that "disarmament" is necessary to prevent artificial intelligence from dominating humans.
