The detention period for independent Representative Kang Sun-woo and former Seoul City Councilor Kim Kyung, who were indicted on charges of giving and receiving 100 million won in exchange for a city council nomination, is about to expire.

The detention period for Rep. Kang and former Councilor Kim runs until the 26th.

The current Criminal Procedure Act stipulates that the detention period is two months, but it can be extended twice per court instance.

This means that a defendant can be kept in custody for a maximum of six months per instance.

As Rep. Kang and former Councilor Kim were indicted and detained on March 27, the six-month detention period expires on the 26th.

Since it is difficult for a ruling to be delivered before their detention expires, the court may decide on bail with conditions such as a ban on contacting people related to the case.

During the sentencing hearing held on the 16th, the court designated October 14 as the date for the sentencing hearing.

Rep. Kang and former Councilor Kim are accused of exchanging a shopping bag containing 100 million won at a hotel in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, in January 2022 ahead of the local elections in exchange for a city council candidate nomination.

The prosecution has demanded a four-year prison sentence for Rep. Kang and a two-year prison sentence for former Councilor Kim.
