The U.S. government is considering withdrawing between 25,000 and 40,000 troops out of the 80,000 U.S. service members stationed in Europe, according to a report by U.S. broadcaster NBC.

This would be the largest reduction since the end of the Cold War in the 1990s, with Germany, Italy, and Spain being discussed as potential locations for the drawdown. These countries have been singled out by U.S. President Trump for being uncooperative or critical regarding support for the war with Iran.

The troop reduction plan is expected to be finalized after a final recommendation is submitted this coming November and reported to President Trump.
