A shooting occurred at a high school in South Cotabato province on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on the 18th (local time), leaving at least two people dead and seven others injured.

According to the Philippine Department of Education and South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo, the shooting broke out at around 1:18 p.m. that day at Banga National High School located in the municipality of Banga, South Cotabato. Two students were killed, and at least seven others, including students, were injured and are receiving treatment at a hospital.

One of the fatalities is reportedly the shooting suspect, while the suspect's condition, identity, and motive remain under investigation.

The Department of Education said in a statement, "Our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our students, teachers, and school personnel," adding, "We are working closely with regional field offices, local offices, local authorities, and law enforcement agencies under the education department to determine the circumstances of the incident and provide necessary support."

Immediately following the shooting, local authorities in Banga suspended all classes in schools throughout the municipality.

Gun violence at schools has been occurring in succession in the Philippines recently.

Previously in June, 14-year-old and 15-year-old suspects opened fire with handguns at a high school in Tacloban City, Leyte province, central Philippines, killing three students.

Furthermore, last month at a junior and senior high school in Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur province, Mindanao, a student opened fire with a rifle and a handgun, killing one student before taking their own life.
