The Better Future, a group of lawmakers from the Democratic Party of Korea, urged the government today (September 17) to respond firmly to the United States' request for troop deployment to the Strait of Hormuz, stating, "There is no diplomatic practical gain that takes precedence over the lives of the people and our military."

Members of The Better Future released a joint statement today, declaring, "We strongly oppose the U.S. request for deployment to the Strait of Hormuz, regardless of any format."

They stated, "Deploying South Korean troops and military assets to military actions lacking secured justification could result in participating in violations of international law," adding, "Instead of a principled-free deployment, the government should seek safe and peaceful ways to contribute to maintaining international peace and securing freedom of navigation."

They went on to express deep concern, saying, "While the government maintains its stance that 'nothing has been decided,' in reality, on-site investigations and discussions through various channels are proceeding in a way that makes deployment a fait accompli." They emphasized, "We clearly recognize that the issue of Hormuz deployment cannot be decided under hasty decisions or political pressure, and we strongly demand a resolute response to the deployment request."

They warned, "Procedures that the public can understand, such as public hearings, public opinion gathering, and public debates at the National Assembly level, have not been sufficiently conducted," adding, "We must clearly recognize that initiating deployment procedures without procedural legitimacy will inevitably lose legitimacy itself."
