A 20-something Chinese tourist has been indicted for illegally filming the bodies of around 20 women in areas such as Seongsu-dong, Mapo, and Yeongdeungpo in Seoul.

The Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors Office announced that it has indicted a Chinese national, surnamed A, without detention on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes (utilizing cameras or other devices for filming).

A was caught red-handed around 6 p.m. on August 4 last month while secretly filming a woman's body parts with his smartphone at a cafe in Seongsu-dong, Seoul.

An investigation of A's smartphone by the police revealed a massive collection of illegally filmed videos and photos taken not only in Seongsu-dong, but also in crowded major areas across Seoul including Mapo-gu and Yeongdeungpo-gu.

The number of confirmed victims identified so far totals 27.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the illicit footage was distributed externally.

A, who entered South Korea for tourism purposes at the end of July last year, has been subject to a departure ban since August 5 last month during the course of the investigation.

The police plan to investigate whether the illicit footage was distributed externally and strengthen crackdowns on illegal filming crimes targeting multiple victims.
