A man in his 60s has been sentenced to a heavy prison term for stabbing his wife more than 10 times out of suspicion of infidelity and attempting to kill his mother-in-law as she tried to intervene.

Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 11 (Presiding Judge Park Dong-gyu) announced today (September 15) that it has sentenced a man identified as A, who was put on trial on charges of attempted murder, to 14 years in prison.

In March of this year, A went to the home of his mother-in-law where his wife, B, was staying in the middle of the night. When they refused to open the door, he broke the glass door and forced his way inside.

He then used a weapon he had brought with him to stab B in the chest and arms more than 10 times.

When the weapon broke, he grabbed another weapon from inside the house and continued to attack B.

He also repeatedly stabbed his mother-in-law as she tried to stop him.

Previously, while serving a prison sentence for drunk driving, A began to suspect infidelity by B, with whom he shared a common-law relationship.

Upon being paroled, A proposed registering their marriage, but B refused. After hearing B say, "I am going to sleep at my mother's house," he went to the location and committed the crime.

The crime was committed in a fit of anger while under the influence of alcohol, just two days after he was released on parole.

The court stated the sentencing reasons, noting, "The victims have suffered severe physical, psychological, and financial damage, and the victims and their families have repeatedly petitioned for severe punishment. The defendant's culpability is also great given that he committed the crime without exercising self-restraint during his parole period."

The court took into consideration the fact that A admitted to the crime and had no prior criminal record for violence.
