The men's national basketball team, which secured an encouraging three-game winning streak in the group stage of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, will face Jordan for a spot in the semifinals.
Led by head coach Nikolais Mazurs of Latvia, the national team will square off against Jordan in the Asian Games quarterfinals at 10:00 a.m. on the 16th at the Aichi International Arena in Nagoya, Japan.
Our national team swept Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and Japan in the group stage to finish first in Group A with three wins, setting up a quarterfinal match against tough opponent Jordan, which placed third in Group B with one win and two losses.
In this tournament, 12 countries are divided into three groups for the group stage, and overall rankings are determined based on their results. The teams ranked 1st and 2nd are paired with one of the 7th or 8th-placed teams, while the teams ranked 3rd and 4th face one of the 5th or 6th-placed teams in a draw-determined quarterfinal matchup.
However, teams that were in the same group during the group stage will not face each other in the quarterfinals.
South Korea finished the group stage with the second-best overall record following China, which went undefeated with three wins in Group C, meaning they were scheduled to meet one of the 7th or 8th-placed teams. Since Saudi Arabia, which was in the same Group A during the group stage, finished 8th, the matchup against 7th-placed Jordan was finalized.
Although Jordan finished third in Group B behind Iran and Chinese Taipei in the group stage, they are a formidable opponent with a FIBA ranking of 41st, higher than South Korea's 57th, and won the silver medal behind the Philippines at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games held in 2023.
For our team, which suffered its lowest-ever finish of 7th place at the Hangzhou Asian Games, getting past Jordan in the quarterfinals would secure a better result than three years ago and accelerate the challenge for a medal.
Lee Hyun-jung, who served as the team's ace with consistent performances in the group stage, and KBL MVP Lee Jeong-hyeon, who sharpened his scoring touch by dominating the third quarter against Japan, are expected to lead the charge once again.
It would be a bonus if veteran players Lee Seung-hyun and Jang Jae-seok firmly protect the paint, combined with perimeter shooting from players like Yu Gi-sang.
In particular, it is encouraging that key forward Choi Jun-yong, who was named to the Asian Games roster but did not play in the group stage due to his challenge in the U.S. stage, is set to join and play starting from the quarterfinals.
The recovery status of Yeo Jun-seok, who injured his foot in the first group match and sat out the second and third matches, is cited as a variable, but it is reported that his condition has improved.
SBS will broadcast the men's basketball quarterfinal match between South Korea and Jordan live starting from 9:55 a.m. on the 16th.
