On the 6th, a six-story building consisting of one basement level and five above-ground floors in New Delhi, India, collapsed in an instant, leaving dozens of students trapped under the rubble.

While an estimated 20 or so students were believed to be inside the guesthouse located near the South Campus of the University of Delhi, rescue operations lasting nearly 27 hours ended with 7 people confirmed dead.

While the exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation, it was reported that the building was more than 55 years old and that basement renovation work had been underway prior to the accident.

Furthermore, suspicions have been raised that the building lacked proper construction permits, that the basement work was also carried out without authorization, and that the structure had been illegally expanded.

Through this accident, we examine the problems surrounding local guesthouse facilities and the current state of safety management.
