A man identified by his surname Park, who is accused of impersonating a female influencer online and swindling billions of won by falsely claiming he would sell luxury goods at rock-bottom prices, has been put on trial.

The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office announced today (September 14) that it indicted Park on charges including fraud under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Economic Crimes on the 11th.

According to the investigation, Park collected money after claiming on social media that he would sell luxury bags and other items at one-tenth of their market value, but failed to deliver the goods.

The number of confirmed victims stands at approximately 50, with total damages amounting to about 4.2 billion won.

When the police transferred the case to the prosecutors in early July, Park was already in custody in connection with a separate fraud case.

However, he was released after the appellate court handling the separate fraud case sentenced him to two years in prison suspended for three years.

Continuing its investigation into additional cases of damage, the police applied for a pre-trial detention warrant, and a warrant review for Park was scheduled for mid-August.

Investigators found that Park suddenly went into hiding just ahead of the hearing.

The police have placed a travel ban and a nationwide manhunt order on Park and are tracking his whereabouts.

The prosecutors stated that they indicted Park without detention for the case initially transferred by the police, and plan to continue investigation and prosecution procedures once his custody is secured and additional cases are transferred.
