A video capturing the recent scenery of Udo, Jeju Island, which has seen a sharp surge in Chinese tourists, is becoming a hot topic online.
Recently, a video showing the current state of Udo, filled with Chinese tourists instead of domestic travelers, was uploaded to the YouTube channel "Carbon Seungyeop."
In the video, major tourist spots in Udo were bustling with Chinese tourists, and a ferry captain remarked, "Eighty percent of the passengers are Chinese, while only 20 percent are Korean."
Nearby shopping streets also featured signs with Chinese characters written larger than Korean ones.
Along with the increase in tourists, disorderly behaviors that drew frowns were also captured.
The sandy beaches were littered with trash, and even used diapers were left behind, drawing criticism.
The reactions of local merchants were mixed.
While some expressed gratitude that the stagnant local commercial district was revived thanks to foreign tourists, others expressed bitterness that domestic tourists had stopped visiting.
Actual statistics also revealed that the proportion of Chinese tourists within Jeju Island is overwhelming.
According to the Jeju Tourism Organization's Jeju Tourism Big Data Platform, visitors to Jeju in June consisted of approximately 870,000 domestic travelers and 240,000 foreign travelers.
Among them, Chinese nationals accounted for about 176,000, exceeding 70 percent of all foreigners and demonstrating Jeju tourism's high reliance on China.
This figure vastly outpaces the approximately 8,200 Japanese visitors who arrived in Jeju last June.
The YouTuber shared his thoughts, saying, "The positions of Jeju residents and merchants may differ," and expressed hope that the Korean public would show more interest in Jeju moving forward.
