A driver in their 20s has been arrested by police on charges of driving under the influence and causing a fatal accident.

At around 2:00 a.m. today (September 14), a vehicle driven by a 24-year-old individual, A, collided with a passenger car moving straight at an intersection in Okjeong-dong, Yangju, Gyeonggi Province.

As a result of the crash, B, a man in his 30s who was inside the victim's vehicle, was transported to a hospital in a state of cardiac arrest and ultimately passed away.

Police investigations revealed that A's blood alcohol concentration at the time of the accident was at a level subject to license revocation.

The bereaved family of B told SBS, "B was a young friend who lived diligently, undergoing hemodialysis during the day due to poor health and working in the evening," adding, "We have had to vainly send away a young friend who was so excited to finally have a room of his own, all because of a drunk driving accident before he could even fully bloom."

They repeatedly urged, "Please raise awareness about drunk driving and put effort into preventing its recurrence."

Having arrested A, the police plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident, including whether a signal violation occurred, and review whether to apply for an arrest warrant.
