U.S. President Donald Trump, currently visiting Ireland, reiterated his support for Northern Ireland to separate from the United Kingdom and unify with Ireland, local time yesterday.

He also added that he would not yet discuss Scottish independence, unsettling the U.K. for the second consecutive day.

Speaking to reporters at the Irish Open golf tournament held at his own golf resort in Doonbeg, western Ireland, President Trump reaffirmed his remarks from the previous day in Dublin, stating, "You have Northern Ireland, and you have Ireland, and I think bringing them together as one is one of the most natural things."

He continued, "You asked about Scotland as well, but I won't talk about that issue just yet," adding, "I'll save it for later."

On the 12th, the first day of his visit to Ireland, President Trump caused a diplomatic stir by repeatedly making remarks to the effect that "it would be wonderful if Northern Ireland separated from the U.K." right after a meeting with Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin in Dublin and during a speech to diplomats and business leaders at the U.S. Ambassador's residence in Ireland.

Whether Northern Ireland should remain part of the U.K. is a highly sensitive issue for both the U.K. and Ireland, and the United States has maintained neutrality on the matter for decades.

The issue of Scottish independence is also considered extremely sensitive for the U.K. as it is directly tied to the dissolution of the British union.

Although a referendum on Scottish independence was voted down in 2014, the issue was reignited following Brexit (Britain's exit from the European Union) and continues to serve as a source of tension between the Scottish Government and the U.K. government.

The United Kingdom consists of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
