The race for the next president of MBC has been narrowed down to two candidates: Lee Sung-joo, executive director of management at iMBC, and Jeon Dong-geon, former CEO of Ulsan MBC (listed in alphabetical order).
The Foundation for Broadcast Culture (FBC), the majority shareholder of MBC, and the Public Recommendation Committee for MBC President (PRC), which includes 150 citizens, held a policy presentation for the presidential candidates at the Golden Mouse Hall in Sangam MBC, Mapo-gu, Seoul, on September 12.
During the presentation, which was broadcast live online, four candidates—Lee Geun-haeng, Jeon Dong-geon, Lee Ho-in, and Lee Sung-joo—shared their respective management plans covering the public responsibilities of public broadcasting, measures to overcome deficits, and organizational reform strategies.
Following the presentations, the PRC selected the two final candidates through deliberation, a question-and-answer session with the candidates, and a vote.
Candidate Lee Sung-joo joined MBC as a reporter in 1995 and served as the head of the MBC branch of the National Media Union from 2013 to 2015.
After serving as the director of the Media Planning Bureau, he has been working as the executive director of management at iMBC since 2024.
Candidate Jeon Dong-geon joined MBC as a reporter in 1991 and worked on "Current Events Magazine 2580" from 1995 to 1999.
After serving as the president of the Broadcast Reporters Association and the director of news production, he served as the CEO of Ulsan MBC from 2021 to 2024.
The FBC board of directors plans to hold an extraordinary board meeting at 2:00 PM on September 13 to conduct final interviews with the two candidates and finalize the nominee for the new president.
The new president will be finalized at the MBC general shareholders' meeting on September 14.
