The Israeli military carried out an airstrike in the Gaza Strip on the 10th (local time), killing a high-ranking commander of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, according to Reuters reports yesterday.

According to Reuters, the Israeli military announced that the airstrike killed Mohammed Abdel-Salam Alyazouri, along with two other commanders.

Hamas also confirmed the death of Alyazouri.

The Associated Press reported that Alyazouri's body, wrapped in a Hamas flag, was placed in a mosque in the Gaza Strip on this day, drawing crowds of mourners.

Alyazouri held various positions within Hamas, including deputy commander of the Khan Younis Brigade, and is known to have played a key role in planning the surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

At the time, the Hamas surprise attack resulted in 1,221 deaths on the Israeli side, and 251 hostages were dragged into the Gaza Strip, some of whom ultimately died.

Because of this, the situation is considered the worst security failure in Israeli history.
