Controversy has erupted at a U.S. Republican midterm convention attended by former U.S. President Donald Trump, after an attendee shouted that opposition Democratic election candidates should be shot.

According to the U.S. daily The Washington Post on the 10th (local time), the remarks were made while Republican Senator Ted Cruz (Texas) was giving a speech at the Republican convention held in Dallas, Texas, that day.

At the time, Senator Cruz was speaking about how hatred had influenced the assassination attempt against President Trump and the killing of U.S. right-wing activist Charlie Kirk a year ago.

While Senator Cruz was addressing hate crimes and discussing Democratic Senate candidates and others, a man in the audience shouted three times, "You should shoot him."

The Democratic figures mentioned during Senator Cruz's speech included New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Michigan State Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, and Texas State Senate candidate James Talarico.

Senator Cruz, who was speaking when the remarks came from the audience, did not react immediately.

It remains unconfirmed whether he heard the controversial remarks, and a spokesperson for Senator Cruz declined to comment.

A video clip of his speech was subsequently posted on Senator Cruz's social media account, which captures the convention attendee's remarks inciting a shooting.

Michigan Democratic State Senate candidate El-Sayed, who was referenced in Senator Cruz's speech, stated that everyone who heard the remarks inciting violence must condemn them.

In an interview with CNN, he pointed out, "This has become a normal part of our politics," and emphasized, "Democracy should be a process by which we peacefully resolve our problems."

Democratic House Whip Katherine Clark (Massachusetts) urged all Republican lawmakers, including Senator Cruz, to denounce the remarks.
