A man in his 70s has died after falling into the water while gathering shellfish on a tidal flat in Seocheon, South Chungcheong Province.

According to the South Chungcheong Fire Headquarters and other authorities, a report was received at around 7:10 PM yesterday (September 10) stating that two people who went to gather seafood on a tidal flat in Biin-myeon, Seocheon-gun, South Chungcheong Province, were unable to return.

Rescue authorities dispatched to the scene searched the coastline and discovered a man in his 70s in cardiac arrest. He was transferred to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead.

The other person who accompanied him reportedly managed to escape on their own.

At the time of the accident, the west coast was experiencing a "spring tide" period, characterized by a large tidal range and swift currents. The Boryeong Coast Guard had issued a coastal safety accident advisory starting from September 9.

The Coast Guard is investigating the exact circumstances of the accident by questioning witnesses and others.
