Yong Hye-in, the nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family, stated today (the 11th) that she is "taking the criticism seriously" regarding the ongoing controversy over her concurrently holding a proportional representative lawmaker seat and a ministerial position.

Arriving at the confirmation hearing preparation office set up at the Korea Youth Work Agency in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, at around 8:40 a.m. today, Nominee Yong gave this response when reporters pointed out that "just because dual-office holding is legally permitted does not mean that everything is acceptable simply because it is not illegal."

She also added, "I am well aware that there are diverse opinions regarding my political decision. However, what I ask is that the facts be handled fairly regarding policy matters and issues raised by the People Power Party, such as the 'family party' and 'ghost office' allegations."

When reporters repeatedly asked about the dual-office issue, she replied, "I will provide additional explanations on necessary parts at another time."

In response to a question asking whether she believes she can carry out her ministerial duties by gathering public opinion given that negative public sentiment exceeds 70%, Nominee Yong stated, "Yesterday was the first time I explained my stance about 10 days after my nomination, so I believe the public will take a look."

She continued, "Just as I have conducted my legislative activities trusting only the people, I will continue to look only to the people and explain the necessary parts in detail."

However, she did not answer questions such as whether she expects a change of heart among the youth generation following her press conference the previous day, or whether she received any contact from the presidential office after the press conference.

Previously, during a press conference held the day before, Nominee Yong expressed her intention to retain her lawmaker seat even if appointed as a minister, stating, "Lawmakers concurrently holding state councilor positions is a permitted principle under the law" and "It is difficult to agree to applying a different standard solely to proportional representatives."
