Heavy rain started falling in the Tokai region of central Honshu, Japan, yesterday (the 8th), causing continuous flooding damage.

NHK and Kyodo News reported that rain clouds developed across a wide area of Honshu due to the influence of a stationary front and a tropical depression weakened from a typhoon.

Torrential downpours poured down as linear precipitation bands formed in Aichi and Gifu prefectures in Japan yesterday evening.

A Level 5 Flood Special Warning, the highest level of alert, was briefly issued for the Shonai River flowing through these two prefectures.

A Level 5 "Emergency Safety Assurance" was issued for Nagoya, which was later lowered to a Level 4 "Evacuation Order."

Nagoya recorded 104.5 mm of rainfall per hour until 5 p.m. yesterday.

The Ueda River flowing through Nagoya saw its water level rise rapidly and overflow, submerging vehicles in water.

Due to the heavy rain, all public schools and kindergartens in Nagoya city went into temporary closure that day.

With the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games just 10 days away, water leaks were confirmed at various stadium facilities due to this heavy downpour.

Evacuation orders were also temporarily issued to athletes who had entered the country in advance and were staying at their accommodations.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, rain clouds are still developing in areas such as Shikoku and Tokai.

There is a possibility that heavy downpours will continue to hit these regions.

The Japan Meteorological Agency stated, "As the tropical depression merges with the front and moves northeastward, heavy rain is expected to continue from western Japan to Tohoku," adding, "There is a high possibility of warning-level heavy rain continuing in the Tokai, Kinki, Shikoku, and Kanto-Koshin regions through the 9th."
