The South Korean men's volleyball team (ranked 27th in the world) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Asian Men's Volleyball Championship despite a defeat against Thailand (ranked 48th).

Led by head coach Isanae Ramirez, South Korea lost 2-3 (18-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-22, 12-15) to Thailand in their second match of Group C in the group stage held at the Kitakyushu City General Gymnasium in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, on the 7th.

Following their 2-3 defeat in the group stage of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup last June, South Korea suffered another 2-3 loss to Thailand.

Thailand is currently led by South Korean head coach Park Ki-won.

Having beaten Taiwan 3-1 in their opening match on the 4th, South Korea recorded one win and one loss with 4 points, finishing second in Group C behind Thailand, which secured its place in the quarterfinals with two wins and 5 points.

South Korea has its final match against Qatar remaining on the 8th, but has already secured a spot in the quarterfinals regardless of the outcome.

In this tournament featuring 12 countries, the top two teams from each of the three groups, along with the two best third-placed teams, advance to the quarterfinals.

Even if South Korea loses to Qatar, it has secured either second place in the group or one of the best records among third-placed teams to reach the knockout stage, but the loss to Thailand means they cannot avoid a difficult path ahead in the tournament.

If South Korea finishes the group stage in second or third place in Group C, it could face powerhouse teams with high world rankings such as Japan (ranked 6th) and Iran (ranked 17th), as well as China (ranked 29th) and Australia (ranked 41th), depending on the consolidated standings.

Depending on the final combined rankings, there is also a possibility of facing Group C leader Thailand once again.

South Korea brought the defeat upon itself by being heavily outperformed in blocking, trailing 4-13.

After easily dropping the first and second sets, South Korea rallied from a 16-13 lead in the third set, pulling ahead 20-14 with blocks and service aces by Cha Young-suk (KB Insurance) to capture one set.

Propelled by the fierce attack of Huh Su-bong (Hyundai Capital), who poured in 9 points in the fourth set, South Korea forced the match into a fifth set. However, trailing 12-13, an attack by Lim Sung-jin (KB Insurance) went out of bounds, followed by Huh Su-bong's attack being blocked by Thailand, leading to a final defeat.

Huh Su-bong fought hard with a match-high 25 points, while Lim Dong-hyuk (Korean Air) added 14 points.
