U.S. President Donald Trump, who has shown a strong fixation on changing place names, has now hinted at renaming the western state of New Mexico.

On the 6th (local time), President Trump posted a map of New Mexico on the social media platform Truth Social.

On the map, a red X was drawn over "Mexico" in the name "New Mexico," with "America" written right below it.

This is interpreted as an expression of his intention to change the state name of New Mexico to New America.

In a separate post, President Trump claimed, "Many people have suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the worst areas for election fraud, to New America," adding, "It is a much more dignified and beautiful name."

New Mexico was mostly incorporated into U.S. territory after the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848, and it became the 47th U.S. state in 1912.

However, the name New Mexico itself originates from the Spanish name "Nuevo México," which had been used since the Spanish colonial era.

Since entering his second term, President Trump has successively changed place names both at home and abroad.

Shortly after taking office last year, he changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

Additionally, on August 27, amid escalating trade tensions with Canada, he signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario, located on the border between the U.S. and Canada, to Lake America.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, pushed back against President Trump's post, stating, "New Mexico's name is not up for debate. It has been our name since long before the United States existed."
