The Donald Trump administration of the United States stated on the 6th (local time) that it is "waiting for the South Korean government to commit resources" in the Strait of Hormuz.

Regarding the South Korean government's review of ways to make a military contribution to the Strait of Hormuz, a White House official told Voice of America (VOA) on the same day that "South Korea is one of the major importers of Middle Eastern crude oil" and that "we are still waiting for South Korea to commit resources to the region (the Middle East)."

In response to an inquiry regarding this, a Pentagon official said, "President Trump has publicly stated that he expects allies to step up and help defend freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz."

The official added, "Regarding potential (asset or troop) deployments, please direct your questions to the South Korean government."

In a media interview on the 30th of last month, President Trump reiterated his claim that South Korea and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) member states did not help regarding the Iran war, mentioning that he would "remember that."

At the same time, he stated his position that if allies do not step up for the United States, the US cannot simply continue to help them unilaterally.

As the United States repeatedly pressures allies to expand their roles, a Cheong Wa Dae (Blue House) official stated on the 4th that it is reviewing practical ways to contribute in the Strait of Hormuz, which includes military contributions.

Regarding whether overseas troop deployment could be considered in this context, the official said, "We believe there is room to maneuver, provided there is no significant damage to the readiness posture on the Korean Peninsula."
