Nikolajs Mazurs, who took the helm as the first foreign head coach in South Korean basketball history, could not hide his satisfaction after securing a resounding victory in a friendly match against the Philippines, held just six days ahead of the Asian Games.

The South Korean men's national basketball team, led by coach Mazurs, clinched a dominant 81-55 victory against the Philippines in the friendly match held today (the 4th) at the KT Sonicboom Arena in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.

Coach Mazurs, who took office late last year, achieved his first consecutive wins since taking command with today's victory, bringing his overall record to 3 wins and 6 losses.

Having struggled previously with two separate three-game losing streaks, the Mazurs squad built strong momentum following their victory over Saudi Arabia in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, and kept that momentum going by claiming today's game as well.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, coach Mazurs gave his general review, saying, "The players showed fantastic energy, and overall every single player displayed a fighting spirit. As I always emphasize, our energy and passion are continuously rising."

The Philippines, the defending Asian Games men's basketball champions ranked 39th in the FIBA rankings—higher than South Korea (57th)—took to the court excluding a large portion of their core players, sending only three members from their World Cup Asian Qualifier roster from late last month.

Even considering this context, South Korea's performance was more than enough to earn a passing grade.

South Korea seized the initiative by taking the lead from the very beginning of the match and maintained a stable flow throughout the game to seal the comprehensive victory.

Coach Mazurs gave particularly high marks to the team's cohesive defensive movements.

He emphasized, "We were able to play a good game because we executed strong ball pressure on the opponent holding the ball in defense. We must consistently show this kind of defense and performance moving forward."

Even amid the sweeping victory, he clearly pointed out areas that need improvement.

Coach Mazurs stated, "We had too many turnovers and missed many shots. These are areas we must continue to develop. We will identify our shortcomings through training and work to improve them."

He added, "The shots need to go in more often." Pointing to Lee Hyun-jung, who was seated alongside him at the press conference, he expressed his trust, saying, "Today Lee Hyun-jung's 3-point shooting percentage stopped at 10%, but he is a player with the ability to raise it up to 50%. I believe he will show even better performances going forward. As our shooting accuracy rises, the team's overall performance will come alive even more."

He also did not hold back praise for Lee Jeong-hyeon, who played a leading role in the victory by recording 27 points and 5 assists, including 7 three-pointers.

Coach Mazurs praised him by saying, "Our team's point guard is an important position that must shoulder passing, shooting, creating opportunities, and game management all at once. Today, Lee Jeong-hyeon performed all of those roles to perfection, and even showed the ability to finish plays when second-chance opportunities arose through offensive rebounds. I truly trust him deeply."
