Jeong Chang-sung, who is accused of murdering a Chinese exchange student he was teaching and abandoning her body, was transferred to the prosecution in custody today (September 4). Jeong claims he committed the crime out of fear of losing his job if his relationship with the victim became known, but it has been confirmed that he fell short of the threshold in a psychopath checklist evaluation.

Gyeongsan Police Station in Gyeongbuk Province announced that it has transferred 31-year-old Jeong Chang-sung, a Chinese university instructor, to the prosecution in custody on charges including murder, as well as the mutilation, abandonment, and concealment of a corpse.

Jeong is accused of strangling a Chinese exchange student in her 20s to death at his residence in Gyeongsan on August 20, and then mutilating and abandoning her body in various locations across the country.

Police investigations revealed that Jeong stated, "When the victim, with whom I had a romantic relationship, threatened to expose our relationship to the university during an argument, I committed the crime because I was afraid of losing my job."

Police explained that they presume the two were indeed in a romantic relationship based on the results of a lie detector test and various other circumstantial evidence.

Police also stated that they applied additional charges of obstruction of official duties, as Jeong attempted to disrupt the investigation by dressing in women's clothing immediately after the crime, traveling to Dongdaegu Station carrying a suitcase and the victim's mobile phone, and then reporting the victim as missing.

Over the past weekend, a psychopathy checklist evaluation—for which he had previously expressed refusal—was conducted, and the results fell short of the classification threshold of 25 points.

Police stated that they will continue searching for the victim's remains even after the transfer to the prosecution, while also investigating additional offenses, such as allegations that Jeong threatened other female students by telling them, "You need to stay on my good side to graduate."
