The U.S. federal government is pilot-testing artificial intelligence (AI) in job interviews for hiring public servants.

According to CBS News reports, AI interviews will be first applied to applicants for a private-sector tech expert recruitment program with two-year terms.

During the interview conducted through CodeSignal, an AI-based hiring platform, applicants will receive questions from the AI, which will then record and summarize their responses.

Hiring managers will subsequently review the interview contents organized by the AI to evaluate the candidates.

Officials expect that this pilot project will pave the way for a more widespread use of AI in federal government hiring interviews in the future.

The U.S. federal government, which employs approximately 1.9 million people, has been evaluated as lagging behind private companies in utilizing AI during the hiring screening process.

In response, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which handles federal human resources, issued guidelines last week recommending that various agencies utilize AI in their hiring processes.

However, the agency also outlined the principle that humans must oversee critical personnel decisions.

The OPM has been pushing for measures to shorten the federal government's hiring procedures, which have long faced criticism for slow processing speeds.
