A married couple that checked into motels posing as guests and stole computer parts from the rooms has been sentenced to prison.

The Daejeon District Court announced on the 2nd that Judge Baek Kyung-hyun of Criminal Division 6 sentenced a man in his 30s, surnamed A, to two years in prison, and his wife in her 40s, surnamed B, to one year in prison with two years of probation and 80 hours of community service, after indicting them on charges including special larceny.

The couple stood trial on charges of making reservations at motels in Daejeon, Seoul, and Incheon in February, entering the rooms, and stealing a total of 8 million won worth of PC components—including graphics cards, memory cards, and keyboards—over six occasions using tools they had brought with them.

Investigations revealed that they committed the crimes to sell the stolen parts.

Separately, the husband, A, was also tried and indicted on charges including stealing cigarettes from convenience stores and defrauding a victim of 100,000 won by falsely claiming he would sell an online game account.

The court stated, "The number of crimes committed by A is high, the methods varied, and he has a history of receiving fines for similar offenses, which makes strict punishment warranted. However, we took favorable circumstances into account, such as the fact that he admitted to all charges, compensated some of the victims for their losses, and reached settlements."

Regarding B, the court added, "Her culpability is not light given the number and method of her crimes, but we considered favorable factors such as the fact that, aside from a previous record of a 1 million won fine for fraud, she has no other criminal record."

The couple appealed the ruling, expressing dissatisfaction with the verdict.
