The Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced today (September 2) that it held a policy roundtable on establishing a social safety net for young small business owners at KT&G Sangsang Planet in Seongdong-gu, Seoul.

The roundtable was arranged to share the 2027 policy directions for the small business social safety net, which were formulated based on feedback raised during a previous roundtable on social safety nets for small business owners.

Oh Won-jun, CEO of Brewbake and a prospective entrepreneur who gave a case presentation, shared his motives for choosing entrepreneurship over employment and his startup challenges, noting that comprehensive government support policies are necessary to reduce the burden of failure.

Following this, the Ministry unveiled its new social safety net policy directions, which consist of safety nets for youth startups and challenges, a life safety net supporting health, caregiving, and child-rearing, and a social insurance safety net preparing for business risks such as closure or industrial accidents.

The Ministry plans to refine the detailed support contents and implementation methods by reflecting on-site feedback and push forward with related projects starting next year.

During the open discussion, young small business owners shared the difficulties they experienced from the startup stage through the business management process.

They also agreed on the necessity of establishing social safety net policies, pointing out that while support policies for the initial startup stage have steadily expanded, support for crises that may arise during business operations has been insufficient.

Lee Byung-kwon, Vice Minister of SMEs and Startups, stated, "We will build a robust social safety net that provides small business owners with the strength to endure temporary management crises and helps them get back on their feet even if they close their businesses."
