A middle school student in Jeju has been caught by the police for illegally filming a teacher.

The Jeju Dongbu Police Station announced yesterday (September 1) that it has booked and is investigating a middle school student, referred to as A, on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes (filming using cameras, etc.).

Student A is accused of illegally filming a teacher's body and other parts with a smartphone during a field trip around August 14.

The school confirmed the incident on the day it occurred and submitted a petition to the police.

During the investigation into student A, the police discovered images in which the illegally filmed photos were synthesized with other photos using deepfake technology.

A police official stated, "We are currently conducting a forensic examination of student A's smartphone to investigate whether the synthesized materials are sexual depictions."

The police are investigating the exact details of the case, including whether the illegal footage was distributed and if there are additional victims.

Meanwhile, the Jeju Teachers' Union issued a press release after the incident came to light, urging, "The Jeju Special Self-Governing Office of Education and investigative authorities must provide immediate and complete protection and treatment support for the victimized teacher."
