Amidst all of this, people who survived dramatically are offering a ray of hope.

Gwak Sang-eun reports on the story of a single house that held its ground against a massive torrent, and how quick thinking and a prompt response by a school principal saved the lives of some 900 students.

Swollen, rushing waters swallow a mountain village.

Muddy water surges like a giant wave, and the wreckage of destroyed homes is swept away by the current.

Yet, right in the middle of this deadly wave, a turquoise house stands miraculously firm.

The family members, who stood on the balcony waiting for rescue in terror, all survived.

Though the inside of the house was covered in muddy water, smiles spread across their faces as they looked at the home that protected their family.

[Laxmi Pandey / Homeowner Couple: I am truly happy now. It feels like our family has been reborn. My mother, my daughter, my in-laws, and my husband are all safe.]

Another miracle took place at a nearby school in Trishuli.

Just before the flood struck, some 900 students at the school escaped with their lives by a hair's breadth.

Upon hearing news of the impending flood, the school principal immediately suspended classes, had the students board buses and motorcycles, or run on foot to evacuate them to higher ground.

And just 14 minutes after the last bus carrying the students crossed the bridge, a massive wave of muddy water engulfed the village, and the school vanished without a trace.

A flood that swallowed everything in its path.

The stories of those who survived within it are giving strength to the people of Nepal.
