Spanish manager Roberto Moreno has been appointed as the interim head coach to lead the South Korean national football team out of crisis. He will initially lead the team for six A-matches this year and could potentially stay on to manage the Asian Cup next year depending on his performance.

Through its first-ever open recruitment process, the Korea Football Association selected 48-year-old Moreno as the interim head coach.

Becoming the first Spanish manager to lead South Korean football, Moreno will oversee six A-matches through November, joined by five Spanish coaches including chief coach Docampo.

However, the association stated that his contract could be extended through the Asian Cup in January next year depending on the evaluation results.

Having started his coaching career in his 20s without professional playing experience, Moreno served as an assistant to world-renowned manager Luis Enrique at AS Roma, Barcelona, and the Spanish national team. In 2019, he took charge of the Spanish national team for eight months in place of Enrique, leading them to an undefeated streak of seven wins and two draws.

Since then, he managed professional teams in France, Spain, and Russia until last year, earning praise for his data-driven tactical design and exceptional opponent analysis.

An official from the Korea Football Association told SBS, "It was impressive that he conducted a thorough and long-term analysis of South Korean football," adding, "He received high marks for presenting a game model that maximizes our players' strengths through more aggressive tactical changes."

Moreno plans to reside in South Korea during his tenure and is scheduled to enter the country as soon as his visa is issued.
