Swollen torrents swallow up a mountainous village.

Muddy waters rush in like giant waves, and the debris of shattered houses is swept away by the current.

Yet, right in the middle of this deadly wave, a turquoise house stands firm as if by a miracle.

[Prakash Piakurel / Homeowner couple: We called out the name of God and thought this was the end.]

The family, who stood on the balcony waiting for rescue in terror, all survived.

Though the inside of the house was covered in muddy water, smiles spread across their faces as they looked at the house that protected their family.

[Laxmi Pandey / Homeowner couple: I am truly happy right now. It feels like our family has been reborn. My mother, daughter, in-laws, and husband are all safe.]

Another miracle took place at a nearby school in Trishuli.

Just before the floods struck, some 900 students at the school narrowly escaped with their lives by a hair's breadth.

As soon as the principal heard the news of the impending flood, classes were suspended, and students were evacuated to higher ground by boarding buses and motorcycles or running on foot.

And just 14 minutes after the last bus carrying students crossed the bridge, a massive wall of muddy water engulfed the village, and the school vanished without a trace.

[Rajendra Dawadi / School Principal: When I left the school, the water was already entering the building.]

A flood that swallowed everything in its path.

The stories of those who survived it are providing strength to the people of Nepal.
