A 40-something woman went on a stabbing rampage in Times Square, a major tourist attraction in New York, leaving one pedestrian dead and another injured.

According to the New York Post on the 31st local time, a 49-year-old woman residing in Queens, New York, successively stabbed two pedestrians with a knife around 4:30 p.m. that day.

The woman, who came to Times Square carrying two knives in a shopping bag, stabbed a 68-year-old man in the abdomen who was standing with his wife near the crosswalk around 7th Avenue and 41st Street, which divides New York north and south.

A few seconds later, she also stabbed a 32-year-old woman passing by in the abdomen.

The victims were rushed to the hospital, but the female victim died.

The male victim was reported to be in stable condition.

The incident occurred in a core area of Times Square, which is densely packed with tourists and heavily deployed with police officers.

Police have not disclosed whether the victims were tourists or New York residents.

The woman who stabbed the two pedestrians subsequently faced off against police near 43rd Street.

Police fired a Taser at the woman, who refused to surrender, but failed to subdue her. Two police officers then opened fire on the woman as she approached them while brandishing a weapon.

The woman received emergency treatment at the scene, but died.

According to the NYPD, the assailant was confirmed to have a record with the police regarding mental health issues.

Police, who are investigating the motive for the crime, stated that no evidence related to terrorism has been found. This marks the second murder case in Times Square this year, following an incident last May where a man was stabbed to death.
