The identity of Jeong Chang-seong (31), a Chinese university lecturer arrested on charges including murder and mutilation of a corpse for killing a Chinese female student who took his class, was disclosed today (Sept. 1).

The Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency posted Jeong's name, mugshot, age, and other personal information on its website today.

The previous day, the police held a disclosure deliberation committee and announced the reason for the decision, stating, "The brutality of the crime and the severity of the damage are recognized, and there is sufficient evidence," adding, "We decided to disclose personal information by comprehensively considering the public interest, such as crime prevention."

The personal information will be posted on the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency website until October 1.

Jeong was arrested on August 25 on charges of murdering a 25-year-old Chinese female student surnamed A in his studio apartment in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan, in the early morning hours of August 20, mutilating her body, and abandoning the remains in wooded areas and garbage dumps in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province, and Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk Province.

He is also accused of filing a false report to disrupt the investigation or traveling to Dongdaegu Station disguised in women's clothing to turn off the victim's mobile phone.

The police applied five charges against Jeong, including murder, mutilation, abandonment, and concealment of a corpse, and obstruction of official duties by fraudulent means.

The police plan to forward Jeong to the prosecution by September 4 at the latest.
