In the Jeonbuk region, which was pounded with nearly 200mm of torrential rain per day, two elderly individuals went missing yesterday (August 31). Flooding and landslides occurred successively.

Our first report today comes from reporter Shin Yong-il.

A four-lane round-trip road is completely submerged in muddy water.

A passenger car driving by at the time became stranded in the middle of the road, unable to move forward or backward.

Heavy rain of around 200mm poured down on the Jeonbuk region overnight, and water rushing down from the mountains failed to drain properly, inundating surrounding villages.

[Park Chan-su / Asan-myeon, Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk]: "The cars are all submerged right now. The cars have their engines stalled. Everything is stalled, and the engines are ruined. I called the insurance company, but they cannot even get here."

Damages such as flooded roads and houses, and mudslides continued to pour in, with more than 200 reports of rain damage received by police and fire authorities over the three days starting from last weekend.

The slope behind a house collapsed, exposing red soil, or heaps of swept-down soil and tree branches pushed right up behind houses in a tangled mess.

[Kwon Du-yeol / Mujang-myeon, Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk]: "There was some debris at the entrance reaching up to over there, so I went in to gather it toward the middle. I went in and shoveled about three spadefuls when it collapsed in a split second."

In Jeongeup, where a heavy rain warning was once issued, a report was filed that a man in his 70s who went out at dawn to clear a water channel had not returned, and in Gochang, a man in his 60s working in a vinyl greenhouse went missing, prompting police and fire authorities to conduct search operations.

In Asan-myeon, Gochang-gun, a stream overflowed and submerged a bridge connecting villages, and in Haeri-myeon, Gochang-gun, Gungsan Reservoir temporarily filled to 120 percent of its flood level, leading residents to evacuate.
