Less than a week after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order officially renaming Lake Ontario, a lake located on the border with Canada, to "Lake America," the updated name has been applied to Google Maps.

Local time on the 30th, searching for and zooming in on the location of Lake Ontario on Google Maps in the United States reveals a body of water labeled with the name Lake America.

Even searching directly for Lake Ontario automatically redirects to Lake America.

Google explained via its blog that it changed the name of the lake in accordance with its usual practice of reflecting geographic names provided by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) on Google Maps.

However, the name on the map changes depending on the region from which it is accessed.

If you use Google Maps in the United States, it appears as Lake America, while in Canada, it is displayed as Lake Ontario as before.

In third-party regions, both names are indicated together as Lake Ontario (Lake America).

Google also promptly applied name changes last year when President Trump signed executive orders renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and changing the name of Denali, North America's highest peak located in Alaska, to Mount McKinley.

Lake Ontario is a large lake situated between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York.

As one of the five Great Lakes of North America, it serves as the border between the two countries.

This place name originates from the language of the Indigenous Wyandot people and is known to have been used for over 400 years.

However, as friction arose between Canada and the United States recently over tariff issues, President Trump signed an executive order on the 27th changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America.

In response, Canada is pushing back.

The previous day, Doug Ford, Premier of the Canadian province of Ontario, erected a sign by Lake Ontario reading "Lake Ontario. Now, and always," and criticized on social media, saying, "Long after President Trump has left (the White House), this place will still be called Lake Ontario."
